5 Parts of the Home You Can Renovate in Winter
December 25 | by Greg Westfall
Wintertime may not seem like the most ideal to tackle a renovation. But you may be surprised to learn that the colder months are perfect for projects around the home. Without vacations and other sunny-weather distractions, it’s always easier to get things done in winter. And if you require a contractor, hiring one is usually no problem -- since the industry tends to slow down this time of year.Â
Although you can’t build a new patio or revamp your garden, there are many smaller projects you can take on. So check out our list of simple projects that won’t be hampered by the weather!
1) Paint the walls
Because most homeowners tend to paint during the spring and summer, you may find a lot of deals on your favourite colors during the winter months. That’s why this is the best time to give your walls a facelift in beautiful, uplifting hues. Consider revamping your powder room with a splash of bold color, or modernizing that home office with your favorite shade of grey. Paint tends to dry faster in colder temperatures, making this the perfect wintertime project.Â
2) Replace kitchen countertopsÂ
Want to refresh the look of your kitchen without undergoing a massive reno? The best way to achieve this is by simply updating your countertops. And unlike replacing cabinetry or appliances, this type of project doesn’t require a bunch of trips in and out of the house, either.Â
Choosing the right countertop material is always key. Quartz, for example, provides the durability you need for high-traffic areas while maximizing on aesthetics. To keep things simple, avoid changing up the cabinets or kitchen island. Instead, focus on replacing all countertops with high-quality materials in complementary hues.Â
3) Upgrade lighting fixtures
Early sunsets and a general lack of sunlight can really bring down the mood. So why not replace dreary lighting with brighter and better fixtures? Replace those dated pendant lights above the kitchen island with updated versions that offer more sparkle. Or treat yourself to that oversized chandelier you’ve been eyeing for your dining area. You’ll be amazed at how a simple lighting swap can transform the look of any room.Â
4) Replace old carpets
Unlike laying hardwood, replacing carpets is much less invasive. Whether you want to upgrade the living room or get rid of stained carpets in your child’s nursery, there’s no harm in putting down some fresh new flooring. When choosing carpets, pick models that are hypoallergenic. Certain man-made fibers are mold and mildew-resistant, which can help reduce allergic reactions. If you’re concerned about dust, consider ripping out old carpets and replacing them with rugs instead.Â
5) Renovate the laundry room
Many of us spend a big chunk of our weekly chores doing laundry. And yet, the laundry room is one of the most overlooked areas of the home. Maximize efficiency by creating space for folding and storage. And beautify the room to turn it into a place you enjoy spending time in. If you can afford it, complete the project by splurging on an energy-efficient washer and dryer.Â
