by Jamey Vick
Are you renting a dumpster for the first time? Knowing the dumpster rental rules before you start disposing can save you time, money, and a frustrating phone call. Here's what you need to know.
Ins and Outs – What's Welcome in Your Dumpster & What to Keep Out
Residential cleanouts are straightforward, especially when you know what is accepted. Accepted materials typically include:
- Household furniture
- Construction debris (drywall, lumber, flooring)
- Yard waste and landscaping materials
- Appliances (check with your provider on refrigerants)
- Mattresses, cardboard, and general clutter
If it came out of your home during a renovation or cleanout, chances are good it can go in. Contact a VaVia representative if you have any questions or concerns.
Certain materials are banned from dumpsters because improper disposal poses serious environmental and safety risks. Common prohibited dumpster items include:
- Hazardous waste – paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil
- Electronics – TVs, computers, monitors
- Tires and batteries
- Medical or biohazardous waste
- Flammable or explosive materials
These items require special handling and designated disposal facilities to protect landfill workers, groundwater, and the community.
