If you're not sure which one you need, the 20-yard dumpster is usually the safest choice. It holds 10 more cubic yards than the smaller container for a modest difference in price, which makes it a good fit for remodels and larger cleanouts. The 10-yard dumpster is built for dense loads like concrete, brick, and dirt. Both sizes have walk-in access through a rear door, so you can wheel debris right in instead of lifting it over the side.

If the dumpster will sit in your own driveway, you generally won't need a permit. Placing it on the street is different, since that puts it in the public right-of-way, and each village has its own rules. In Wheaton, for example, you'd need a street occupancy permit, Naperville uses a right-of-way permit, and Elmhurst has a permit specifically for dumpsters. Each suburb's VaVia page walks through its local rules, and our team is happy to help you sort it out when you book.

Most household and renovation debris is welcome, but Illinois law bans two types of material from landfill dumpsters that catch a lot of renters off guard. The first is landscape waste, including grass clippings, leaves, and brush. The second is electronics like TVs, computers, monitors, and printers. Other prohibited items include hazardous waste such as paint, fuels, batteries, tires, propane tanks, and appliances with freon. If you're unsure about something, give us a call before you load it.
